Within 72 hours of Donald Trump becoming President of the United States, his administration has taken actions to suspend civil rights litigation by the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. This includes halting the filing of all civil rights cases until further notice, as well as notifying the administration of court-enforceable agreements related to policing reforms called “consent decrees”. These consent decrees were established in response to incidents like the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, addressing issues such as no-knock warrants and excessive use of force. Critics suggest that these actions may grant law enforcement increased immunity and autonomy to engage in abusive behavior.
